OUR MISSION

A vital part of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Presbyterian Foundation cultivates, attracts and manages financial resources of individuals and institutions to further Christ’s mission.

From the President

Generosity coupled with the convictions of compassion and justice have been hallmarks of Presbyterians who engage the Foundation every year. This past year has been a testament to those special strengths and qualities of our community. We are honored to announce that the Foundation received an astonishing $138,614,547 in new gifts in 2023. This achievement stands as the second highest amount received in our 225- year history. Accomplishments like that speak volumes of our donors’ collective commitment to significantly enhance their congregations and ministries, as well as mission efforts around the globe.

The shift towards online giving in particular has seen remarkable growth, a tool that we initiated for churches and ministries several years before the COVID pandemic in 2020. With more than 250,000 donations coming through our giving portals last year, the volume of gifts processed through online giving has been nothing short of astounding. This is an average of about 685 transactions per day. And we never forget that each one highlights the trust placed in us at the Foundation to effectively steward your gifts.

Even more exciting to me has been the momentous milestone of surpassing the $1 billion mark in funds distributed to mission and ministry since 2010. Imagine that. Over $1 billion has been poured out nationally and around the world, often in desperate situations, to transform countless lives of people and communities through the power of God’s love in action – and all because of your generosity and faithfulness.

Our commitment to serve you and the wider church remains steadfast. Your faithfulness inspires me and our whole staff daily. It motivates us to dream big with you as, together, we plan a future to share the love and teachings of Jesus Christ that have enriched us all.

Thank you for another year of your support and trust in the Presbyterian Foundation, and for all you do in your congregations, your communities, and worldwide to tangibly share God’s love with magnificent impact.

Grace and Peace,

Rev. Tom Taylor, J.D., Ph.D., President and CEO

Helping churches plan
for the future faithfully

We have a deep level of experience with church property. In fact, since 2012, we’ve helped more than 1,400 churches figure out what God would have them do next through Project Regeneration.

We’ve walked with churches as they realized they had more buildings than they needed – or when they decided merging with another congregation would honor God’s call for their church. For others, the most faithful decision may have been to close, or to sell their property and use the proceeds to support causes they love in their community and around the world in perpetuity.

We continue to work with congregations, ministries, camps and conference centers, and more, as each one seeks to faithfully steward assets entrusted to them.

Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Memphis sold its building and moved into a storefront almost a decade ago as part of Project Regeneration. It has freed the church from the burden of a too-large building to focus on community involvement. “It’s something really incredible that we’re getting to do and be here,” says Rev. Patrick Harley, pastor. “I’m grateful the members of this church were bold enough to take that leap."

Online Giving

Introduced more than a decade ago, the Presbyterian Foundation’s online giving program became a vital way for congregations to receive gifts during the pandemic. The availability of the tool long before it was critical helped many congregations transition more easily to an online format. Those who wanted to add online giving were able to do so with the help of our Ministry Relations Officers and operations team.

Young Pastors Program

Since the fall of 2022, the Presbyterian Foundation has gathered groups of Millennial and Gen X pastors to explore their own ministry settings, leadership skills, and spiritual growth. Together the pastors celebrate worship, build relationships, share best practices, and learn more about the resources of the Foundation.

Rev. Jessica Tate, a Foundation consultant, has led five of these gatherings since the program’s inception. During that period, 140 young pastors across the Presbyterian Church (USA) have participated. The Foundation invites a new group of approximately 30 pastors to each gathering, which are held in geographically diverse locations all over the United States. Pastors can remain in a cohort virtually for six more sessions, held every two weeks, to learn from each other and from Foundation staff.

Pastors who have attended have expressed their gratitude for the program, which isf led by Rev. Dr. Glen Bell, Senior Vice President of Development at the Foundation.

Pastoring can feel apocalyptic sometimes - “The church is dying,” “The church needs to change,” etc. Sometimes those conversations feel entrenched in ecclesial scarcity. This scarcity has - at times - lingered longer in my psyche than the actual difficulties we face. Thank you for providing the opportunity to find sparks of hope, creativity, and resilience in my colleagues.

I really, really appreciate what the Presbyterian Foundation is doing for us and our churches! This gathering fills a critical gap in the care and development of us pastors.

GROWING ENDOWMENT FUNDS FOR MINISTRIES

Our experience in stewarding gifts from our fellow Presbyterians is unmatched. Endowments afford donors the ability to express their faith and establish enduring legacies that will be celebrated by future Presbyterians for generations to come.

As of December 31, 2023, we held more than $1 billion in 7,200 endowment funds that will support churches, schools, ministries, seminaries, and more — far into the future.

A $100,000 permanent endowment fund placed with the Presbyterian Foundation in 1980 would have paid out over $528,910 to mission and have a principal value of $300,799 at the end of 2023. The average annual investment return was 7.63%.

Partnering with Organizations

Connection is a core value of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Both individual Presbyterians and congregations gather together in mission to accomplish far more than they could separately. As a trusted partner in funding mission, the Presbyterian Foundation plays a unique role in helping these ministries accomplish the mission to which God has called them.
